How CWL Medal Calculation Works

Everything you need to know to maximize your Clan War League medal income. Each concept below explains the math and strategy behind the numbers.

What is CWL?

Clan War League (CWL) is a monthly 7-day tournament where clans compete against 7 other clans in their group. Each day, your clan fights one war. After 7 days, the clan with the most war wins finishes 1st.

Key rules:

  • Each player gets 1 attack per war day (7 attacks total across the season)
  • Each attack can earn 0–3 stars
  • Maximum stars per player = 21 (7 days x 3 stars)
  • Your league tier and placement determine base medal payouts
  • Bonus packages are awarded to top-performing players
Star Yield — The Medal Multiplier

Your Star Yield is the percentage of base medals you actually receive. It's calculated per-player based on total stars earned over the 7 war days.

Star Yield = 20% + (Stars × 10%)
Max 100% (capped at 8+ stars)
Stars Yield Medals (Champ III 1st = 360 base)
0 20% 72 medals
3 50% 180 medals
5 70% 252 medals
8 100% 360 medals ← CAP
15 100% 360 medals (same as 8)

Why 8 stars? Supercell's formula gives 20% base + 10% per star. At 8 stars you hit 100%. Any stars beyond 8 don't increase your medals, but they help your clan win more wars, which increases bonus packages!

Base Medals — League & Placement

Base Medals are determined by two factors:

  1. Your League — Higher leagues award more medals (Bronze III = 34 medals for 1st, Legend = 508 medals for 1st)
  2. Your Placement — 1st place gets the most medals, 8th place gets the least

Example: A Champion III clan finishing 1st place gets 360 base medals per player (before star yield). The same clan finishing 8th gets 276 base medals.

Your Final Medals = Base Medals × Star Yield + Bonus Package (if awarded).

Bonus Packages

Bonus packages are extra medals that clan leaders can award to top-performing players after CWL ends. Each package is worth a fixed amount based on your league.

Total Bonus Pkgs = Gbase + W (war wins)
  • Base packages range from 1 (Bronze) to 6 (Legend)
  • Bonus per package: 35 medals (Bronze) up to 105 medals (Legend)

Example: Champion III (base: 4 pkgs) finishing 1st with 3 war wins = 4 + 3 = 7 bonus packages available. Each is worth 95 medals.

Roster Rotation — Maximize Clan Medals

The single most important CWL strategy: Rotate players at 8 stars to maximize total clan medal income.

Since star yield caps at 100% (8 stars), any stars beyond 8 are wasted for that player's personal medal count. Instead, bench players who've hit 8 stars and bring in fresh players who can earn their own stars.

Optimal rotation target: Each player gets 5–7 stars
Never leave a player at 8+ for the whole season if others can still attack!

The Bonus Distribution section helps you identify who deserves bonus packages based on total stars earned.

CWL Loot Shop — Best Value Items

Spend your CWL medals in the in-game shop. Here are the items ranked by value:

Item Cost Value Rank
Hammer of Building 185 Best — Skips max upgrade time (19 days at TH18)
Hammer of Fighting 165 Great for lab upgrades
Hammer of Heroes 165 Great for hero equipment
Hammer of Spells 120 Good for spell factory upgrades
Research Potion 35 Best potion value
Builder Potion 30 Solid for multi-builder pushes
Training Potion 15 Cheap, good for farming sessions
Wall Ring 10 Instant wall upgrades

The Purchase Planner (top right) automatically calculates the best combo of items for your medal balance — prioritizing hammers first!

15v15 vs 30v30

Your clan chooses between 15v15 or 30v30 CWL signup. The base medal payout per player is the same regardless of size.

  • 15v15 — Easier to manage, fewer players to coordinate. Each player gets more attacks.
  • 30v30 — More total clan medals, harder to coordinate rotations. Better for large active clans.

Pro tip: If your clan has 15+ active members who can get 5+ stars, 15v15 is mathematically better because the same bonus pool goes to fewer players.

How CWL Medals Work in 2026

Clan War League medals in 2026 are calculated using three variables: your clan's final placement (1st to 8th), your personal star count (0 to 8+), and bonus packages earned from war wins. The yield formula is: min(100%, 20% + stars × 10%). Zero stars guarantees a 20% floor. Eight or more stars caps your yield at 100%.

CWL Medal Table by League — 2026

League 1st Place Per Step Bonus Value
Bronze I 58 -4 35 medals
Crystal I 274 -10 75 medals
Master I 382 -12 90 medals
Champion I 408 -12 105 medals
Titan I 454 -12 102 medals
Legend 508 -14 105 medals

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CWL medals do you get in Champion League?

In Champion III, first place earns 360 base medals. Each placement lower reduces medals by 12. With 7 war wins, your clan receives 4 base bonuses + 7 = 11 total bonus packages worth 95 medals each. A player with 8 stars earns 100% of the placement reward (360 medals) plus their bonus share.

When should I rotate players in CWL?

Rotate a player out when they reach 8 stars (100% yield cap). Every star beyond 8 earns zero additional medals. Bringing in a bench player with 0 stars adds a fresh 20% minimum yield contributor, maximizing clan total medals.

What is the best use of CWL medals?

Hammers of Fighting (165 medals) and Hammers of Building (185 medals) provide the best time value in 2026. A Hammer of Building saves up to 13 days of upgrade time at TH17. Builder Potions at 30 medals each are the best value for active builders on long upgrades.

What is the CWL medal floor?

Every CWL participant receives a minimum 20% of their clan's placement reward regardless of stars earned. This is the Zero-Star Baseline Protection. In Champion III first place, even a 0-star player receives 72 medals (20% of 360). This prevents players from earning nothing if they struggled to 3-star their assigned base.
